Some of our major achievements in this direction are:
- Arushi’s intervention led to making several public places barrier-free and disabled friendly – among these banks, a railway station and the world-famous Sanchi Stupas. We work with owners and management of hotels, restaurants, museums, archeological sites, parks, shopping malls, banks, school and colleges, public utilities and services to make them accessible.
- Closely working with Indian Railways, we are consistently trying to make railway stations and services accessible. The Habibganj Railway Station, Bhopal is now equipped with the Railway time-table in Braille, accessible special parking, ramps, toilets and water facility. There are warning and pathway tiles for the visually impaired on the platform and for the first time anywhere in the world seat numbers in Braille in the ISO 9000 certified Bhopal Express.
- Arushi has held capacity building programs for more than 2000 teachers all over M.P. and Chhattisgarh in collaboration with UNICEF, Rajiv Gandhi Shiksha Mission (Govt of M.P.) Bhoj Open University and other agencies.
- In an effort to make the persons with disability aware of their constitutional rights and schemes meant for their welfare, Arushi has compiled ADHAAR, a booklet on Concessions and Facilities offered by the State and Central Governments from time to time for persons with disabilities. This booklet is very helpful for special children and their guardians who live in remote and inaccessible villages and cannot find information regarding relevant provisions available to them.
- Arushi has developed awareness material in Braille and audio on issues concerning health with specific focus on AIDS and other Sexually Transmitted Diseases, sanitation and cleanliness, environment and water conservation.
- Arushi’s advocacy efforts with the M.P. Board of Secondary Education led to the following steps:
- All Schools applying for recognition now need to be barrier-free with ramps, accessible water facility and disabled-friendly toilet.
- No student with disability can be denied admission.
- Efforts towards creating barrier-free environment in educational institutions, museums, parks, railway stations, banks and hotels.
- Action against schools denying admission and facilities to disabled students.
