SENSITIZATION & ORIENTATION PROGRAMS

Arushi organizes sensitization and awareness programs and orientation workshops to create positive attitudes towards the people with disabilities (PWDs). It helps familiarize others with the specific needs of people with visual impairment. During these programs the trainees were given tips on handling and assisting these persons and eliminating barriers. To accomplish this, Arushi:

  • Organizes weekly orientation workshops for public functionaries, such as community workers, NGOs, teachers, police personnel, industry and museum staff and general public.

  • Lobbies for physical access for the disabled in public places such as cinema halls, schools, banks and museums.

Disability awareness programs are designed and delivered with the purpose of reducing the barriers and increase the understanding, acceptance, and inclusion for those with physical disabilities within our community. Disability awareness programs aim to:
  • Challenge some of our general assumptions, attitudes, values, and beliefs regarding disability and diversity.
  • Educate the public by providing a more realistic, practical, and positive picture of people with disabilities.
  • Provide sensible suggestions on how to interact more comfortably and confidently to those with impairments.
Poster Campaign

To spread awareness regarding disability, Arushi has created and produced posters on several aspects of disability and inclusive education. Sri Gulzar has provided effective one line messages on disabilities for these. Rajya Shiksha Kendra, Madhya Pradesh printed and distributed 6.5 lakh such posters throughout Madhya Pradesh. Government of Chhattisgarh also printed 7.5 lakh posters.

Film Festival on Disability

Every year, Arushi organizes a film festival on disability. This helps in bringing about an attitudinal change in the community towards the disabled and also helps in creating a positive image with regard to the contributions a person with disability can make to the society. It tries to bring together all stakeholders to make them realize that removing social barriers is crucial for  the social mainstreaming/inclusion of persons with disabilities.Films portraying people with disabilities as role models, depicting issues confronting them are screened in cultural centers, schools, colleges, and community halls.

Sensitization and Capacity-Building Programs for Teachers

We have brought out charts with alphabets in Devnagri and English along with their corresponding Braille symbols and on sign language to help teachers with blind students in their regular classrooms.

  • Training in Assam: The School Education Department of Assam invited Arushi to facilitate development of teaching learning and IEC material for Inclusive Education and plan out strategy for increasing enrolment and retention of disabled children. Resource support was also provided by Arushi in orienting their newly appointed resource teachers for taking up inclusive education in the state.

  • DIET Training: Sensitization and awareness programs focusing barrier-free and inclusive environment have been undertaken in the six DIETs (District Institutes of Education and Training) of Madhya Pradesh with UNICEF.
