Community-based Rehabilitation
Community-based Rehabilitation (CBR) refers to activities that involve extension of support to persons with disabilities from within their own community. Through CBR Arushi aims at home-based services provided by the families to their disabled members at home. All work done is home-based. The aim is to increase awareness and understanding of disability within the family and encourage and show the disabled members independent therapy methods that they can perform themselves. Where necessary, for some children, Arushi provides therapy and education.
- Arushi's special educator intervenes with the speech, language, learning and behavioural concerns of children who face such problems due to hearing impairment or developmental delay (retardation)
- Children with orthopedic problems, mainly polio and cerebral palsy, are examined and treated by the physiotherapist.
- Family members are trained and encouraged to give regular exercises to the affected children.
- Advise on special furniture made from simple things available at home, is also provided.
- Arushi organizes identification camps in rural areas. Staff and volunteers make regular visits to villages to identify persons with disabilities.
