Did you know?

If there is a disabled student in your class:

  1. Try to create an atmosphere in which the disabled students would feel comfortable. Make them sit in the front row. Provide them with opportunities to participate in games and cultural activities along with the other students. They may not be able to excel but this will boost their enthusiasm and self-confidence.
  2. Meet and discuss the disabled students' progress with their parents regularly.
  3. While teaching disabled students split the teaching material into small portions and reward them when they provide correct answers.
  4. Encourage them to learn new things and repeat whatever you teach.
  5. If there is a hearing impaired student, make sure that he can see the blackboard and the teacher's face, lips and hands clearly. Make sure that he always wears his hearing aid.
  6. Whenever you use new vocabulary make sure to show/draw pictures of the new words on the blackboard for the hearing impaired student. Write the word on the blackboard, pronounce it slowly with clear lip movements and then explain the meaning of the word.
  7. If a student has a speech disorder, give him enough opportunity to speak and listen to them patiently.
  8. If a student has a visual disability, help him get familiar with the physical surroundings such as his classroom, staff room, staircases if any, drinking water, toilets, playground, so that he can find his way around independently. If there are any changes in the physical environment, help him get acquainted with those changes.
  9. If the school does not have required resources for the visually impaired students like books in Braille & Audio, contact your nearest DIET, Special Educator, or organizations providing Braille books and Audio cassettes.
  10. Provide the visually impaired and other impaired students who are not able to write on their own, with a writer to write their examinations and give them extra time for completing.
  11. When addressing a visually impaired student in class, call out his name rather than looking or pointing at him. Make sure to read aloud whatever you write on the blackboard so that such students do not miss any important points.
  12. Provide visually impaired, slow learners, hearing impaired students with concrete examples when teaching concepts. Teach them the basics of mathematics with the help of objects.
  13. Help a mentally retarded student by establishing regular contact with him so that he does not loose focus. Try and related every thing you teach to his daily life and experiences.
  14. Remove all physical obstacles from the classroom and around it. The water taps should be accessible. Commodes with a rod or railing on the wall should be provided for students who have locomoter disability.
  15. Ensure that students do not make fun, push or bully children with disability who appear different. Encourage all students to help and be friendly with these kids.
